For most gardeners throughout history, notes are an afterthought, I’d imagine. Keeping track of your garden visually is a great way to see what’s going on but without notes, you may forget what issues you encountered, what plants did well (or didn’t!) and how the weather may have affected your growing conditions.

A white grid made on an online app that shows the layout of 3 raised beds, each 4'x8'. They are lined up vertically with 4' space between them. Each bed has a variety of veggies and flowers in each square, representing either a single plant or a grouping for Square Foot Gardening.
Here are three of my 4’x8′ raised bed plans from GrowVeg that show how many plants I can put in a square foot, as well as rows or block of plants that I can simply click and drag to expand.

Enter GrowVeg.com to help you out! I’ve been using the website for the past several years to know when and how much seed to start, organize my notes about plants and issues I encounter, and which varieties of plants I’m growing. They have over 100 varieties of plants to choose from, and their seed catalogs span many different companies.

The plant list shows you which plants can be sown indoors (blue), outdoors (green), and when you can expect to harvest it (orange). It also lets you know how many of each plant to start/how much room you have set aside for them!

It’s a VERY powerful tool and has been immeasurably useful for our garden planning. It also gives you the option to put in your address or zip code to get your first and last frost dates, which are helpful for knowing when to plant different families of plants.

As I’ve stated, there are tons of uses for it, but try it out for yourself sometime! They offer one free week of use before you can choose to subscribe. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
